I liked it more than Unsettled Ground because I’m drawn to stories of black lives in the US south. While all the novels have flaws, this spoiled the novel for me.įinished this a 4am. This for me has lowered my appreciation of the novel. A character executes an action and then the reasons why the action was executed, often in Russian doll layers of explanation. From my frustration, I was sensitive of the frequency of the use of this method in the novel. That was my experience in Vanishing Half. When executed well by a good author like Faulkner in Absalom, Absalom, or more recently, Hilary Mantel in the Wolf Hall trilogy,they can be effective and stimulating.īut they can also stop the forward motion of the novel dead, and prompt a reader's impatience while waiting for the present story to get moving again. ![]() The worst case is the pages of material explaining Stella's backstory after being seen at the party by Jude. ![]() ![]() ![]() Plot elements seem contrived, belief is challenged, but what I found most annoying was the author's constant use of explanation and backstory to fill in space after a development. The only part I enjoyed on a second read was the part before the twins separated. ![]()
