The League and the pirates – and the rest of their world – have their eyes on the long-lost amulet of Black Beryl, which has been discovered and put on display at the British Museum. Witches practice magic quietly – they do not make a huge show of it – and their mortal enemies are pirates, who practice thievery and fly houses about and draw much attention to themselves.Īlex O’Riley is one such pirate, and he is as handsome, roguish and cunning as one would imagine. I’m not clear) so he makes a run for it, changing his name and wearing coloured contact lenses as a disguise. The essential premise is that a teenager called Neil has a dodgy past and ends up going on the run with his mother. I felt like I had started a trilogy in the middle of book two. My notes when reading it include “I don’t even know what the story is about any more”, “Exy appears to be completely unfathomable” and “surely those contact lenses ain’t fooling anyone?” It was badly written, badly structured, had massive plot holes, was overly detailed in parts then woefully scant in others. I was amazed – AMAZED – that there is an entire fandom surrounding the Foxhole Court series. Similar to: The worst Twilight fan fiction. I'm a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.Ĭome find me on Facebook, where I love interacting with my readers. When I'm not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. Not all love stories are made from light some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters growing up. My advice to my readers when starting one of my titles.prepare for the unexpected. My books all tend to be darker romance, edge of you seat, angst filled reads. Such a feat might, some could say should, require a massive volume, but not in this case: Wickham executes his narrative of a millennium of history in scarcely more than 250 pages of highly readable, approachable prose. Wickham conducts readers from the beginning to the very end of the medieval period, even going past its commonly-agreed end to discuss some implications for the early modern period after 1500, as well. The unofficial subtitle of Medieval Europe, emblazoned across the cover of my edition, reads “From the Breakup of the Western Roman Empire to the Reformation,” and this is no exaggeration. That work, Medieval Europe, has certainly confirmed Wickham’s place in my stable of go-to scholars, and yet perhaps inevitably could not live up to the heights of its successor. I was so taken with Wickham’s scholarship of the first six hundred years of the Middle Ages that I immediately sought out his previous work, a history of the entire period. In the early months of 2021, I had the distinct pleasure of reading Chris Wickham’s magnificent Inheritance of Rome (reviewed here on Concerning History ). New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2017. In Hobbie's expert watercolors are dozens of inventive touches-Puddle wearing a shower cap in the bath, Toot floating among hippos, some of his limbs breaking the surface in a subtle mimicry of their stances, funny allusions to famous art or locales the book and its heroes are endearing, and readers will want to see more of Woodcock Pocket soon. A monthly postcard from Toot is reproduced over an illustration from his year-long adventure (scaling cliffs in the Alps, visiting an Italian pastry shop, taking a camel ride through Egypt, etc.), and a sort of reply comes from a scene of Puddle savoring events on the home front: gathering maple sap for syrup, playing in spring mud, painting a self-portrait, or trying out a Halloween mask. He asks Puddle along, but goes forth alone, and from then on, the experiences of the two are laid side by side on the double-page spreads. Meanwhile, Toot peers at the globe with a magnifying glass, planning an ambitious trip. There, Puddle turns his head to the sun streaming in his kitchen window as he makes popcorn on the stove. Two anthropomorphic pigs live in the country setting of Woodcock Pocket. The activities of a homebody and an enthusiastic world traveler are contrasted in illustrations brimming with humor. |
